Why Does My Timeshare Have a Board of Directors?

If you’re the owner of a timeshare interest with a question, concern, or complaint, where can you turn?

In many cases, the answer is your resort’s property owner’s association, as overseen by its board of directors. Often, though, many timeshare owners aren’t familiar with this group – which, in theory, serves an important role in governing and operating the resort on behalf of all “owners.”

Why does a timeshare resort have a board of directors? Who are they, what powers do they have, and how closely are they linked to the resort’s management company?

Our own Michael D. Finn recently took on a few of these common questions in a video interview, available below:

And here’s a transcript of what he had to say:

“The board of directors are in place to oversee resort operations. They are typically elected by the unit owners and they’ll serve a term of years.

They share their responsibilities with a management company and typically the management company really performs all the day-to-day management services necessary to operate it. They’re the professionals and they know how to do it.

So the board of directors position is essentially, these days, more of a ceremonial position, but they are there to oversee the operations and to make sure that the management company is properly doing their job.”
